Battery replacement cost

What does a UPS battery replacement actually cost?

Indicative pricing for VRLA generic, OEM cartridge and lithium-ion upgrades. Includes call-out labour and Battery Stewardship recycling fees. Use for budgeting; final pricing comes from a site-specific quote.

When to replace

Replacement triggers and timing

VRLA at 4-5 years. Sealed lead-acid service life under typical Australian conditions is 4-5 years. A battery on its fifth year that has not been discharge-tested is a runtime risk — measured capacity is often 60-80% of nameplate.

Lithium at 10-15 years. LFP batteries run 10-15 years with regular cycling. Check the BMS state-of-health metric — if it's below 80% you are approaching end-of-warranty performance.

Failed discharge test. A commissioning-grade discharge test that returns <80% of nameplate capacity is a hard replacement trigger regardless of calendar age.

Visible swelling or leakage. Replace immediately. A swollen VRLA cell can vent hydrogen at unexpected rates and is a fire risk; a leaking cell will accelerate corrosion of adjacent terminals.

Lithium upgrade trigger. If your site has >40°C ambient, >5kVA UPS continuous load, or a runtime budget that has grown over time — a lithium upgrade often pays back inside 6-8 years on TCO despite the higher upfront cost.

Compliance trigger. AS/NZS 5139 requires battery rooms above ~300Ah/cell to have ventilation, gas detection and hazardous-zone classification. Lithium upgrades may also trigger BMS, isolation and thermal runaway containment requirements.
